Ola Alghazzouli came to the United States at age 11 from Damascus, Syria. With her new home, she found a string of language and cultural differences that lowered her self-esteem and made her body conscious to the point of bulimia and binge eating. After being introduced to weight lifting, Ola was inspired by the changes she saw in her body and the power that focusing on the positive changes she was seeing gave her. After coming out the other side of her shame surrounding physical strength as a Muslim woman, she embraced her new found ability and feels passionate about helping others do the same.

Strength with a Purpose

Getting back to basics, being outside in nature, art therapy, and movement is what Ola believes to be the key contributors to finding your purpose and loving your body. We are discussing the importance of stepping back and allowing your body to take a break, how to find your purpose through fitness and ways that Ola is able to blend faith and fitness without pushing a religious agenda.

You don't have to be perfect, but if you keep working towards your goal from a place of enjoyment and purpose, you can heal your relationship with your body and live in the true paradise known as Akhirah. Ola is here to open your eyes to the intersection of functional fitness, Muslim faith and the divinity of being in your purpose.

“For anyone who is super exhausted, you are not going to find motivation until you give yourself a little break, take a deep breath, take care of your body, and know why you are doing it.” (23:56)

“When 2014 happened, my grandma passed away, and I was like ‘oh my gosh, my body is a responsibility for me, what the heck am I doing with it?’ And that is when the whole awakening happened, and now I see that it is all meant for me, I am meant to be this trainer.” (28:54)

“My main goal and hope is that I am able to help people see their body in a positive way. And it’s not just about toning out or losing weight, it's about getting a strong mind, loving who you are and what you look like as of now.” (30:48)

Ever had someone comment about how much you're eating with a particular tone of disgust or fake surprise? If you're a woman who puts anything more than child-size portions on her plate, the answer is probably yes. As a society, women are expected to be bird-like eaters who push two leaves of lettuce and a cherry tomato around their plates. (Thanks, diet culture.)

In this episode, I'm examining – and ranting about – why minding your own plate is probably the best idea. It's complicated how we got to this tiny portions club in the first place. And how we're going to collectively get out of it isn't straightforward either. One thing I do know? Plate-shaming someone ain't gonna help.

Our society has a keen knack for creating stigmas that make us feel less than. Diet culture and this restrictive mentality around food are slowly killing our bodies natural rhythm, and that is what Dana Monsees is dedicated to helping correct. Entrepreneur, nutritionist, and founder of Real Food with Dana, Dana is passionate about helping people realize that smaller is not necessarily better.

How To Break-up With Diets & Regain Your Power

This episode is all about healing your relationship with food, finding a nutritional path that works for you, and dismissing what society thinks of your size and being content with who you are. Dana is here to create a space to think about how you approach food, explain why restriction diets are not always better, and share ways that you can motivate yourself to make the changes you want to make. Dana believes that by understanding diet culture and what it subconsciously forces us to do, we can break free of these limitations and find our bliss.

When you are able to find the middle ground between crash diets and falling off the wagon, you can find a place of true body acceptance. Dana encourages you to ditch the diet cycle, break down your fearful or anxious relationship with food and exercise, and start removing those triggers to trust your body. By focusing on an abundance mindset you can stop relying on controlling your diet and exercise to give your life sanity, and instead enjoy the freeness of the human experience.

Dana has a wealth of nutrition knowledge and strong opinions to help you make sustainable lifestyle changes and improve how you interact with food and your body. It is time to break free of the diets and beliefs that have kept you hating your body and start embracing the beauty you hold inside.

How do you relate to Dana’s story of disordered eating and regaining your strength? Share with us in the comments section on the episode page.

  • Identifying where your nutrition overload is coming from how to remove those influences

Quotes

“Food and sustainable lifestyle changes can make a big difference in peoples health without doing any therapy type nutrition or medical intervention.” (11:24)

“A lot of the clinical manifestations that I see in my practice are because people are overstressed, overworked, under eating and over exercising because they don't feel worthy enough in their bodies to take up space.” (15:37)

“Just being in a larger body doesn't predispose you to have all these health conditions. It is the lifestyle choices that you make that are actually causing the health conditions.” (31:25)

“List the millions of diets out there that have all worked for someone, and that still doesn't necessarily mean it is going to work for you.” (45:24)

“It is because I have finally come to a place where I care about nourishing my body instead of trying to make myself take up less space.” (1:04:37)

When you're actively doing things to improve your health – and ultimately feel better in your body – it's so tempting to keep searching for The Magic Bullet. (No, not the mini blender.) The Magic Bullet is that secret sauce, the obscure health hack that everyone hopes will be just around the corner. Diet culture promises quick fixes that are so tempting but don't pan out in the long run, leaving you feeling worse than before.

In this episode, I'm sharing nine positive things you can do for your health that don't involve searching for the magic bullet. I'm not going to lie, nothing on this list is sexy or trendy. It's all basicAF but oh so powerful when you commit to consistently applying them in your life. If you're wondering where to begin, choose one and run with it. These ideas will catch you the bigger fish.

Chasing your dreams can be scary, but it can also be fun and enjoyable when you are aligned with who you are and what you want. After a successful career as an opera singer, Shirin Eskandani realized that she had spent her life chasing her dreams only to end up never satisfied and looking for more. She decided that this was no way to live life, and started Wholehearted Coaching to help other women embrace their dreams and become okay with failure.

Finding Your Joy In The Mindful Hustle

This episode goes beyond fitness and nutrition to help you realize the restrictions you have placed on your life and break free of those conditions. Shirin is exploring the importance of finding joy in the daily micro-moments, how to apply mindfulness and mindset work to find aspects of serenity and ways to accept your life as it is, instead of focusing on the ‘if only’ mentality.

Joy is rooted in the unconditional acceptance of yourself and your life, and nobody deserves that more than you. Stop making yourself feel bad about the things you cannot control, and empower yourself to get back up when life pushes you down. Shirin provides tips and encouragement to get you on that mindful hustle, embrace your why, and learn to be okay with failure while having fun.

Life is too short to run away from what could be your passion. By intentionally cultivating the way you want to feel you can improve your mood, change your mindset, and live how you feel truly free. When you are able to stop and find beauty in the little things, you will be amazed at the power of the world around you and become reunited with your inner intuition.

How do you find happiness in your everyday life? What passions have you been too scared to actively pursue? Leave me a comment on the episode page!

Pretty much everyone I know has been struck by imposter syndrome at one point or another. It's that feeling that – especially when you're about to do something big – that you're a complete fraud and everyone else is gonna find out how unqualified and phony you really are. For some people, imposter syndrome is a nuisance-like mosquito buzzing in their ear. For others, it's a voice so loud that it can shut them down from sharing their goodness and gifts with the world.

I'm not the world's foremost expert on imposter syndrome, but as a human that's lived with it for most of my life, I've developed a few ways to deal with it when it comes up. In this episode, I'm sharing five strategies I mix and match to move past feelings of being an imposter. Maybe some of them will resonate for you!

Travel, whether it's near or far, often has the effect of getting you out of your comfort zone. Adam and Vanessa Lambert at Bee the Wellness have witnessed, firsthand, the transformative power of travel. When combined with community and getting outside of your ordinary, travel can teach you so much.

The Transformative Power of Travel

I first was introduced to Adam and Vanessa Lambert – former fire fighters turned wellness coaches and international adventurers last year. From the first time I talked to them – on their podcast – it was clear they both have an incredible zest for life and electrifying energy. I had them on Harder to Kill Radio a short time later, and a friendship was born.

Last summer, Z and I were lucky enough to meet Adam and Vanessa in person at their BeeFest retreat in Northern California. There, we got to experience how truly special they are when it comes to planning meaningful and memorable travel retreats. I came home feeling refreshed, invigorated, and inspired.

On this episode of the show, I'm welcoming The Lamberts back to talk about the magic of travel and why it's good for your brain. We also chatted about how you can create that space even when you can't go on a trip. And, we let the cat out of the bag about an exciting partnership and what it means for you!

  • Creating moments of quiet in your life
  • Getting out of your environment can lead to big transformations
  • Training for an adventure can give you a massive sense of purpose
  • Our big announcement!

Warmer weather is creeping up on the northern hemisphere and summer will be here before you know it. With it – for many women – comes the fear of showing their bodies at the gym or beach. And so, the only logical solution is to keep everything covered to make others comfortable. Body shaming happens, but that shouldn't stop you from wearing what you want.

In this episode, I'm breaking down some important things to consider if and when you choose to hide your body for the comfort of others. Undoubtedly, this is a highly nuanced and layered conversation, but I'm hoping you can begin to sort through it by asking yourself some simple but important questions. In short, wear the shorts – or don't – this season, but do it because it's what you fully choose.

My favorite refrain when it comes to nutrition and fitness is, "It depends." It's so common to want the super magic secret sauce, the one answer that will unlock the door, or the universal truth that you've just been missing. Usually, it's not that simple.

On today's episode, I'm trying something a bit new...a shorter show! I'm exploring why the devil is in the details and nuance is queen so you can start asking the types of questions that'll give you clearer answers.

Alissa Frazier was sent into a spiral of confusion after her multiple sclerosis diagnosis at the age of twenty-three. Not knowing where to turn or how to best help treat her symptoms, Alissa created LissMS to help others navigate the no-mans land of an MS diagnosis. Now a nutritional therapy consultant and AIP coach, Alissa helps spread the information she has learned to prevent others from suffering. Today she is here to shine a light on this invisible illness and create a space to feel comfortable expressing how you feel both physically and emotionally.

About Alissa Frazier

If you have ever been curious about the massive role nutrition plays in MS symptoms and overall health, how stress and sleep management can impact your ability to cope with a diagnosis, or the importance your mindset plays when trying to heal, Alissa is here to answer all of your questions. By creating an open dialogue around MS, Alissa hopes to share the knowledge that she wishes she knew when she was diagnosed, and create a better healing environment for others.

An advocate for doing what works for your body, using nutrition as a guiding force for your health, and focusing on gut healing and proper digestion, Alissa is dismissing the ‘one size fits all’ approach to health and nutrition one MS case at a time. If you are ready to remove the victim mentality surrounding your symptoms and embrace a healing mindset, Alissa is here to help guide you on your journey.

Has MS impacted you or someone you love? How have you fought against the symptoms? Let us know what you think about Alissa’s story and recommendations in the comments section on the episode page!

Every once in a while, you probably come up against certain circumstances that seem so challenging that there's no way anything positive could come from it. The most resilient people are those that come up against hard life situations and come out transformed for the better. They look for the opportunity to grow, as my friend Kristen says, not in spite of the shit but because of it.

Today I'm heading in a bit of a different direction and sharing a personal story that illustrates a time when life handed me a shit sandwich and how I learned to see the beauty in it all. I'm also sharing how I've everyday-life-sized that lesson to carry it around with me always.

The first time Jennifer Fugo was on Harder to Kill Radio, she educated us on the impact gluten can have on how your whole body functions. After struggling with eczema and skin rashes herself, the connection between skin, nutrition, and looking at your symptoms from a whole holistic point of view became the clear answer to finding solutions to chronic skin issues.

About Jennifer Fugo

With a new found passion to help chronic skin rash patients understand their options and find better-individualized treatment, Jennifer started Skinterrupt to open up the dialogue for improved care that really works. Two years ago, in the midst of planning a big online event with "getting outside your comfort zone" as a theme, I found myself with an interesting realization: even though I was extolling the virtues of getting outside your comfort zone, it had been a long time since I had followed that exact advice. At the risk of sounding hypocritical, I decided to look around for something to challenge me. I settled on trying a new sport, Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

In this episode, I'm talking through why I joined, why I really appreciate jiu-jitsu, and what it's taught me. I'm also sharing seven things I wish I knew before I started...little lessons that I had to learn the hard way. In particular, I'm sharing some things about about Brazilian jiu-jitsu from a female perspective that may help other women who are thinking of joining.

If there is one episode of Harder to Kill Radio that you are going to listen to, this is it. Dr. Lexie Kite and her twin sister Dr. Lindsay Kite are trailblazers in the body image realm and are shattering the societal beauty standards surrounding women, children, and everything in between. Dr. Lexie harnessed her past pain and body shame to identify an issue that women and girls around the world are dealing with, and together the Kite sisters have started a body revolution with their non-profit, Beauty Redefined.

About Dr. Lexie Kite

Beauty Redefined is different than the other body image messages out there. Dr. Lexie is shining a light on all the ways your body and mind have been co-opted by systems that keep you fixated on your body image, and is providing tools to help you rise with resilience in the face of that pain. She is also providing stepping stones to change how you view your body throughout your life as an opportunity to grow.

Some real truth bombs are being dropped today as Dr. Lexie touches on everything from the ways that women and girls are raised differently than men, to viewing the ways that women are objectified as a launching point for greatness, and why you need to start viewing your body as an instrument instead of an ornament.

Dr. Lexie and Dr. Lindsay have pioneered some new approaches to how we think about our bodies, health, and confidence. Dr. Lexie is an advocate of compassion for yourself and others, the power of body image resilience and the need for education around self-objectification. This episode is almost guaranteed to highlight an issue that every woman has dealt with, and Dr. Lexie’s open and honest approach to breaking free of societal standards is refreshing and important.

How does Beauty Redefined’s mission align with your self-improvement goals? Let us know in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes

“I got this tangible impression that I was going to have a daughter. And I was going to be this kind of feminist influence for her, that it was my job. And I felt this sense of hope.” (10:32)

“It taught me again and again that my body can do hard things, and that I am more than the way my body looks.” (12:52)

“Recognizing that you are more than your pain, you are more than your shame, you are more than your body. And you can get to a better, happier, healthier place as you recognize that pain.” (22:53)

“You will start realizing that the joy you feel as you just move your body is so much better than the shame you are gambling on every time you step on that scale.” (40:46)

“My work isn’t just to show people what hurts so that they can be angry at all of the ways the world tells us that we are only bodies. My work and the work Lindsay does through Beauty Redefined is helping people see that they are more than bodies, and how.” (1:03:46)

These days, more people than ever seem to be talking about health and wellness, especially on social media. A quick scroll down the feed of your favorite platform reveals lots of discussion about do's and don'ts, as well as up and coming tends. But along with this, I've been noticing an increasing trend that can only be described as a superiority complex. People are arguing more than ever about health.

In this episode, I explore why this type of elitist attitude isn't helping. The fighting and arguing is doing two things: confusing people about what's right for them (see Episode 178 for more on that) and leaving lots of people out of the conversation when it comes to health and wellness. Eyes on your own plate is a good first step. But it also takes recognizing that there are other structures and systems in place that make it harder for some people to access the components of health and wellness that we talk so much about is quite another.

  • The disturbing trend I've been noticing lately in health / wellness circles
  • What to do (and not) if you notice someone who could benefit from making healthier changes
  • Why health and wellness are complex, layered, and contain many intersections

I've noticed something curious in my community of 40-something women: the pervasive feeling of resignation that life is pretty much over, that it's too late to try something new, and that feeling stronger and more confident at this might as well be a unicorn fantasy. The feeling that the best years of our lives are gone and that we should just roll over and accept that we will never feel stronger, more capable, and more confident.

Well fuck all that. Ladies, we aren't going out that way.

It's not about trying to get back to where we were 10 or 20 years ago and beating ourselves up about it. Rather, it's about accepting and embracing where we're at right now...and seeing ways in which we are strong, powerful, and wise.

Today, I turn 40 and I'm sharing some reflections on four important lessons life has handed me about getting older. There are easily dozens more but these four are ones that resonate with me a lot right now. I'm not about to hide or apologize for my age. I believe 40-something women can be strong and take up more space...and I hope you'll reconsider if you've started giving up.

Most of us know the importance of mobility, finding your breath and addressing all areas of your body during a workout. So what do you do when you find that you don't have the time to integrate these necessary aspects into your regular routine? Trish DaCosta recognized this gap in muscle information and created Barbell Pilates as an answer to these two complementary modalities. By combining strength training and pilates Trish has seen huge benefits to the women she trains and is helping to create more intelligent and resilient bodies.

About Trish DaCosta

Trish is here to break down the fundamentals of Pilates and weight lifting, help us understand why they are so beneficial to each other, and ways in which you can get back into fitness with activities that you love. Everything from the importance of the ‘two-way stretch’, to why you need to let your body recover and the necessity of noticing your breath is on the docket today as Trish schools us in the best ways to integrate Pilates and strength training.

This episode is all about educating women to address control, stabilize muscles and finding out what works best for your body today. As our bodies constantly change and evolve so will our workouts, and Trish is a pioneer of listening to your body and training smarter, not harder.

Have you ever combined pilates and strength training? Let us know what your results were in the comments on the episode page!

“At the end of the day, [my clients] are coming to me to help them feel better about their bodies and they want their bodies to look a certain way, so it's not up to me to be like, no.” (30:29)

“If we could just learn how to inhale and exhale completely, we would solve so many issues in our bodies just from that” (42:36)

“Its really about doing things in a smarter way that makes sense for your goals but also makes sense for where you are at right now” (48:03)

Health and wellness trends come and go so fast they'll make your head spin. And while I'm all for trying new things, it's easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you're doing everything wrong because you aren't jumping on the latest and greatest. Instead of asking yourself, "Is this right," there's a much more powerful question you could be posing instead.

On this Fierce Love Friday edition of the podcast, I'm sharing some important tools and questions for determining how your health journey might unfold. It's not always easy to find the right balance and fierce love is often involved, but the clearer you can get about what's right for you, the better off you'll be.
