It is no secret that many of us feel an increasing pull toward nature, and that we are missing our connection to the Earth. Our society has created a space between us and the natural world and as Dr. Maya Shetreat explains, it's up to each of us to close that gap, and reap the many benefits of being in closer contact with our natural surroundings.

About Dr. Maya Shetreat

Dr. Maya Shetreat is a neurologist, herbalist, and author of The Dirt Cure: Healthy Food, Healthy Gut, Happy Child. She is known as ‘The Dirt Doctor’ and helps her clients connect to the Earth from not only a health perspective but also a physical connection perspective. Dr. Shetreat is based out of New York City and is proof that you don't have to live next to an abundance of nature to bring the outdoors into your daily life.

There are massive health benefits to spending more time outdoors, including better sleep, being calmer, happier, more creative, and a boosted immune system. Being in spiritual and physical contact with the Earth can help restore your electrons and have an incredible boost on your mood and overall wellbeing. Today, Dr. Shetreat gives us heaps of suggestions on how to make your life feel more like an outdoor experience. She argues that you don’t have to change everything in your life to be on a health seeking journey, and by making compromises in your own way you can find ways to connect that make sense for you and experience the transformative powers of nature.

What do you do to get yourself outdoors and reconnect with nature? Let us know in the comments on the episode page!

On Today’s Episode

  • How to bring the outdoors into your living space
  • Small ways to find day to day connections with nature
  • The value of putting more of your physical self into contact with the Earth
  • How the Earth works as a natural anti-inflammatory
  • Why you should make sitting on the floor part of your daily life
  • Giving yourself permission to dive inwards

Quotes

“I do think from a practical standpoint that it is very possible to take small steps to become more connected to nature. And you know every time you take that one step and become more connected, you know kinda the natural world will take one, two or three steps towards you.” (9:12)

“People really think dirt is like a bad thing and I feel like we have done so much damage to ourselves in a sense with this whole idea of like hygiene and being sanitary and it kind of translates also into this idea of sitting on the ground and being connected in that way.” (15:26)

“Whereas we used to have this innate connection to the Earth that was like the source of everything for us, so there was this whole relationship that we had. Now we have sort of shifted our belief into science and it's almost like religious in a way. There is this sort of dogmatic way of saying like you know, does science show it? And it's sort of like… we’re talking about walking outside...” (20:32)

“For me, because all of these processes are so individual for each person, I think its really really important to understand that you give yourself permission.” (30:41)

“Flowers change the way we feel, they transform us. So that is one very simple way to experience that healing energy and feel kind of joy and comfort through all our senses.” (45:28)

Why does the scale have the power to make or ruin your day? Why do we, as a society, keep using the scale as a measurement of health (it's really not) and more importantly, a way to measure self-worth? If you know the scale isn't serving you, what's holding you back from dumping it in the trash right now?

In this episode of Fierce Love Friday, I'm tearing into this topic and asking questions that prompt you to go deeper when examining your relationship with the scale. If hopping on the scale is no longer serving you, it dictates the tone of your day, or you're afraid to stop weighing yourself, this is a Fierce Love episode you must hear!

  • Ways your lifestyle may be contributing to gut imbalance

Quotes

“It wasn't until I treated the underlying problem in the gut that I improved. So I decided to follow the footsteps of the doctor who treated me. And I went into this realm of alternative medicine, and that's where I am now and it's a terrific field to be in.” (9:01)

“Certain [gut] probiotics can aid in depression and anxiety, we see a correlation between different digestive conditions and high cholesterol, high blood sugar and weight gain. And better yet still, the treatment of those gut imbalances showing the ability to improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels, we see a connection to dermatitis or skin that's prone to breakouts and rosacea. We see a connection to rheumatoid arthritis and dietary changes and also bacterial overgrowth. So there is a lot we are learning there” (13:17)

“If you have taken a couple steps to improve your diet and lifestyle and you are not feeling fully well, the next step should be investigating and optimizing your gut health.” (15:56)

“The unfortunate reality is that some providers are really trying to force a dietary solution to something that's really not a dietary problem.” (34:47)

The concept of cheat days is still super popular in the nutrition realm, and I'm here to share 5 unpopular truths about why implementing cheat days could be holding you back. You don't have to eat perfectly to see results either, so how can you navigate the language and concepts around eating to still reach your goals while not making yourself crazy in the process?

If you've been struggling to find balance with your diet / way of eating, and you think that cheat days will help you get "control" over yourself, please take a listen to this edition of Fierce Love Friday before you go any further. Often, cheat days have the exact opposite effect, leaving you feeling disempowered.

As always, YMMV and this way of approaching food may work for you, but for the vast majority of people I've worked with, it's a recipe for disappointment.

So often, it can feel like we’re doing everything “right” and yet still feel unhappy with our lives. As today’s guest Elizabeth DiAlto shares, even if you’re meeting all of the conventional goals our society places on us, you may not be doing service to the truest expression of yourself, and that can cause serious problems. Today she’s helping us tune into our own needs and desires to express ourselves fully.

About Elizabeth DiAlto

Elizabeth is an embodiment coach who created Wild Soul Movement, a women’s movement, and a movement practice, to help her clients live their lives to their highest expressions of self through inward discovery and self-mastery. She works with clients to “redefine the rules, expectations, culture, and conditioning that have separated you from your womanhood and your body”. She believes in living life in a way that is evolved beyond our societal conditioning. Focusing on energy work, spirituality, femininity and womanhood, The Wild Soul Movement is for those who feel a burning desire inside of themselves to continuously evolve and live their truest life.

By untaming yourself, stripping away everything that makes you feel less than, not good enough or too much, Elizabeth encourages taking a look at who stands between you and who you really are. It's time to throw out ideas that stand in the way of accepting yourself exactly the way you are, no matter where you are in the timeline of your life.

How do you feel most comfortable expressing yourself? Under what conditions do you feel it hard to express your true nature? Please let me know in the comments on the show notes page!

On Today’s Episode

  • Seeking freedom and untaming yourself
  • The power of switching ‘I am afraid of…’ to ‘I am curious about…’
  • How to honor the truest version of yourself
  • Harmonizing masculine and feminine energy
  • How to attract people that are aligned with your truth and the difference they can make in your life

Quotes

“Once I created and put Wild Soul Movement out in the world the plan became trust myself, be myself, constantly in pursuit of the fullest, cleanest expression of who I really am, and what are my values and priorities, and I plan around that, rather than formulas and frameworks” (9:48)

“Not that we need to be defined by these boxes, but just to get the gist of how they were built so when it's time to make decisions and make choices we can make them in a way that works for us rather than by following everyone else's advice. I'm all about really cultivating the internal authority because we are way too cultured towards external authority” (22:55)

“I find that women in their 30s, 40s, and early 50s are more and more finding themselves in these positions where they are like ‘Oh my God, I have been working my whole life towards this thing, I have it, my life is great on paper, why am I unhappy? Why do I feel empty? Why am I bored?’ And it’s because again they have just been living according to someone else’s blueprint.” (23:22)

“I love to bring women's awareness to these things, and also men’s. To men, women must seem so inconsistent, so erratic and so all over the place sometimes, it's such an enigma. And to women, we really shame ourselves for that. And we try to like get in line and be more linear and fit inside the box, but for so many people that really goes against our truest nature. And it's just painful, this is why some people get sick, this is why some people are so unhappy because they are just denying their true nature.” (29:12)

Diet labels are, on one hand, helpful. They can help you understand and navigate a seemingly complex world of food options and help you find a community of people to align to, helping you feel less alone in the world.

Yet on the other hand, diet labels may be holding you back from finding your best, personalized nutrition plan. It could be preventing you from exploring other options or worse, become such a huge part of your identity that moving on or letting go can cause a personal crisis.

In this episode, I'm exploring the pros and cons – the good, bad, and ugly – about diet labels to provide you with some food for thought on your own journey.

  • The connection between your relationships to people, stress and food
  • Being more mindful of how you interact with your phone and social media
  • Exploring how your decisions elicit reactions from others

Quotes

“There is a line there where you can be so independent that you are not available to love. And the dance really of life is figuring out how to do you both be committed to or integrated in a relationship with another and maintain who you are.” (9:44)

“You have to lose yourself to find yourself, you have to experience what is not you to know what is you. And in the human experience that is such a beautiful adventure and you sort of wake up to the juiciness of life, the extremes of feelings.” (13:14)

“It's a delicate dance of negotiation and communication, and i think the real key to it is, invite the people to join you, but don't abandon yourself to meet them. Don't shrink yourself to be with someone else… instead say ‘I will continue to rise and be my best self, will you join me?’” (39:40)

“There are no negative feelings, they are just feelings! And they are information. And information provides you with opportunity. And if you're not fucking listening you’re going to hurt. And then you are going to take a pill to numb the hurt or eat a lot of sugar or be sedentary or stay in shitty relationships or fuck around in jobs you hate, because that will be the familiar and growth is always scary. Just like losing people is scary, just like not knowing what the fuck is going to happen is scary. But sometimes knowing what's going to happen really hurts too.” (57:41)

Some of the most regrettable decisions of my life happened while I was drinking. And while alcohol (and the decision to use it) is totally personal, I can firmly say that my life is better without it in so many ways. It's been over 2 years since I've been alcohol free, and today I'm sharing what led to my decision.

But the choice to not drink can be totally fucking socially awkward for a lot of people. Maybe your PITA friends are pressuring you or you just don't want to appear rude. Sometimes it seems easier to go along with it rather than to stand out.

If you're trying to navigate social drinking as a grown-ass adult but you need some tips—or you're on the cusp of going alcohol-free for a while but you need a nudge—this show is for you. Because lawd knows, nobody's drinking wine for the antioxidants ;)
